Hmmm...
Sounds like the settings of the monitor has changed and sleep mode has become disabled. I don't have a Samsung monitor with me (I don't buy Samsung monitors because of bad experiences with them) so I cannot check for sure, but check the menus to see if there's an option to turn off the display if there's no signal? It usually goes by the name of "Energy saver mode". Additionally, check the BIOS to see if the mode to set standby on the monitor (the one with the S1/S3/S4 options) is configured properly. Try each one until you find one that works.

I took a look at your monitor's manual, and the icon you described (exclamation point with keyboard) means "Check Signal Cable". The keyboard is actually a representation of the VGA plug that is on your PC.
The mouse with the five dots is a message for Power Saving Mode. I guess either your PC isn't properly turning off the video card when it goes to sleep, or your PC may not even be going to sleep properly or at all. Does your PC fans keep spinning when you put it to sleep, or do they still go off like normal? I love foxes, especially the one in my avatar.

Today was an auction I have been waiting for, and I acquired a neat little rack to store my computers in, replacing the old wooden cabinet thing they are sitting on now. But that rack came with a pro FM tuner and another PC... a Dell Vostro 220 with an Intel C2D E7400 dual-core CPU.
I also have been thinking a bit (on and off really) about how I use my PCs. I find it more comfortable using a computer at a desk rather than a laptop on a TV dinner stand, which Greta is sitting on. As a result, I end up using the media PC for general browsing sometimes. If my idea works, this is how it will play out... I shall make the Vostro 220 my main go-to PC, hooked up via KVM with Ruby. Timothy will get moved to Anna-Lena, while Greta will be regulated to being the mobile PC while going on trips. Plan subject to changes without notice, as with all my technology experiments. Sorry for not telling the complete info earlier. Actually this minor annoyance happens in my brother's replacement PC. So yeah, everything within the PC is new for the monitor. Monitor setting has never been touched since last year I think.

Only time I get a "Check Signal Cable" on my monitor (HP S2031) is when I physically disconnect the monitor cable from the PC. Perhaps the video card is completely turning off the signal in a way your Samsung monitor interprets as being physically disconnected. This one is somewhat baffling to me as I never experienced this issue. I love foxes, especially the one in my avatar.

Well, you can also check the connection between the cable and the video card. Maybe there is a poor contact somewhere.

I should have never doubted Hazel's power. Now I have an extra Android tablet, but with KitKat. :/
Hmm... then again, he D2Pad turned out to be rather limited due to poorly partitioned system memory and bloatware. Perhaps the KitKat tab could be it's replacement. I love foxes, especially the one in my avatar.
