Well, look what arrived in the mail. Vectorman and my new Famiclone... a GN Twin. Genesis and NES dual clone.

It has a few advantages over my previous clone I used for Genesis games (FC3 Plus).... better video output quality and controllers that closely resemble the Genesis six-button pads. The audio is a tad bit lower quality than the FC3, but it's acceptable and most games sound fine to me.

However, I discovered two issues that are potentially serious. For one, the Genesis portion has a ground loop present in the AV output when you turn it on, but it goes away after 15 minutes or so. :?: I'm not sure why that is.

The second issue pertains to cartridges with battery backed save data. For some reason, games with battery saves don't work properly. At best, any data that was saved to it on another console doesn't appear. At worst, the game will run into glitches or even crash. Even worse is when you take said game to another console or clone, the save data has been erased for real! I wonder if this issue could be tied to the ground loop thing I mentioned earlier. Regular cartridges with no battery saves run fine and the NES clone doesn't appear to have these issues at all.

Despite these issues, I kinda like the GN Twin. If I do decide to keep using it, I have the FC3 or the RetroGen SNES adapter to play the battery save games, though most of them are sports games IIRC. I haven't made a final decision as I need to toy around with the GN Twin for a few more days.

Famiclones are interesting. Though I should just get a real Sega Genesis.

Great. Another few gigabytes of updates for Mac OS X. So much for sleep...

Fixed the problem with the GN Twin ground loop.... the included wall wart is either faulty or not powerful enough. (rating 10v 300mA) I think my GN Twin has a newer GOAC than the one I had five or six years ago. Luckily, I have a few spare 10v Famiclone adapters so I swapped it with a 10v 600mA and the ground loop is gone.

The battery save issue is still happening though.

Faulty Famiclone AC brick autopsy results: Bloated capacitor, from a brand new package. Probably been in storage for years I guess.

I always thought those big wall warts just had a giant transformer. This one had a giant transformer and small PCB with bloated cap.

I plan on acquiring a brand new 10v 600mA adapter off eBay so I can put my spare away for future use.

Too much graphic bloody pictures on Facebook.

To be honest, I haven't been on the receiving end of such pictures until earlier tonight when one of my other friends (not anyone I know from here) decided to link to some anti-Muslim propaganda complete with shock image.

Facebook really needs to add content filters to message like Twitter. Protect the rights of free expression while at the same time respecting sensitivities of your friends.

I had to consult the help of Buster Bunny and his pals to get me the required brain bleach. Also add in a opossum with a rocket pack.

I'm beginning to get back on track myself. I'm feeling good right now, but there are times I still think about Dad. It's going to be this way for awhile, but I should stay positive. Smile

I wish I could do something more than just praying and encouraging from this other side of the planet.
