Wasn't Violette fast enough already with her old RAM? Tongue

Well, I have been testing Win8 on Wendell on and off, tried out some of the Metro Apps,

...

Windows 8 just BEGS to be on a tablet, or on a laptop or PC with a touch screen. Sure, the Desktop portion is fine, and can run the majority of applications that I choose to use. But there is no more Start button....you have to use the Start screen, which you actually have to drag your mouse to the slider on the bottom and drag the bar to where in the Start screen that you want to go. Less ideal than just clicking the Start orb, making a few quick clicks, and launching your program.

As for the Metro apps themselves, you can't simply click X and close them. You have to grab the top of the app screen with your mouse, and drag it to the very bottom. Easy on a tablet, but cumbersome with a mouse.

How do you bring up the Start Screen? Drag your mouse to the bottom left and click the Start graphic. How to bring up the "Charms" so you can actually shut down your system? Drag it up to the top right. Sad

This is not saying I hate Metro. I do like it, but it belongs on a tablet/touch screen, not a desktop with a mouse. I like how you can easily customize the lock screen with your own custom photo and have a nice large user icon.

But...

Sorry Win8. You will have no place on either Greta or Wendell. Only way I am getting Win8 is if I am forced to buy a new laptop or computer, or if I buy a Win8 tablet.

See all the nice fancy schmancy new PCs that are actually designed for Windows 8. What about the one's that aren't huh? Tongue

My thoughts exactly. It just doesn't cut it that they took the steering wheel off a car and replaced it with something most drivers aren't really familiar with.

Going to roll back Wendell to Win7 here in awhile using the recovery disks I wisely made.

When I installed Win8, I made sure not to reformat the whole drive, and left the recovery partition alone. Still, Toshiba recommends you install from the recovery media since they think installing Win8 may cause the recovery partition to no longer work. :?:

But I have to do that thing with Norton and deactivate it upon removal and reactivate it when Win7 is back on.

You don't have to do this with free AV such as Avast or AVG, but Norton has actually been good to me so far. Tongue

-------------

Since a lot of people with new laptops aren't as tech savvy, I wonder how many don't realize they need to have recovery disks made? Or the fact that recovery disks can be useable if the OS goes down and the hard drive didn't fail?

Either that or they're not too aware of the necessity of having recovery media made.
