Did you make sure the shop connected the PCIe power lead to the video card as well?

I'm not sure about that, but if he didn't the video card won't work at all, right? I at least asked him more than once to make sure every necessary cables are properly connected.

Well, logically, the card should not work at all without the PCIe power lead, but I think there are some cards that can at least power up and work in basic mode (text,CGA/EGA/VGA) without the lead, but fails as soon as 3D mode is started. Anyways tho, if it doesn't crash in the next few days, then it's a success.

Just an update to say "so far so good".

I still can't say it as a success yet, though. Not until one entire month passes without occurrence.

Well, let's hope for the best. 600w should be enough for the specifications in your brother's PC. Assuming he doesn't use much USB gadgets and "toys", it should last quite a while.

Well, if it's been a success for this long, I would consider it fixed completely. If it weren't the PSU, I'm certain the freezing issue would have returned. I would say a week is a good amount of time to see if the new PSU is a success.

This freeze was very random. Notice that in the occurrence log there are a few gaps that lasted for more than 2 weeks. The longest record was between 1 May and 29 May where it returned after 4 straight weeks of peace.

So yeah, 1 full month of peace and then I'll declare it a success. Hopefully.

Thanks for everything, and sorry for being quite stubborn in the past. I should have believed that it was the PSU much earlier than this.

No worries. In fact, I should apologize for getting pushy towards the center. I was kinda feeling frustrated with some things at that time and I accidentally let my frustration leak out.

As for not suspecting the power supply, easy mistake to make. I've made it a few times before (resulting in two computer's premature overhaul and thousands of dollars wasted. That's not a typo. I wasted a few months worth of my pay on new hardware) before I finally wised up. And the stupid thing is it took until another failure after the second overhaul before I realize the PSU was really the fault.

Well, hate to tell a bad news, but it happened again. New log started.

21 August: While playing a game.

Since the peace lasted seven weeks, at least we can safely assume that the new PSU did something to mend the problem. Anyone having any insight on this?
