Quote:Sony revealed the first hardware specifications of its PlayStation 4 today, promising "supercharged PC architecture," an X86 processor and 8GB of GDDR5 unified system memory.

"We wanted to hear from developers," said Mark Cerny, lead system architect, at Sony's PS4 unveiling. "We spoke to dozens of the best teams in the world. We wanted to know what was important to them. We wanted to make them happy. Our goal was to create an architecture that would facilitate the expression of their ideas."

Cerny called PS4 "a platform by game creators, for game creators."

The next-gen PlayStation will come with a "massive" hard drive, Cerny added.

I liked the fact that it's based on commodity PC tech - i.e. easier porting of games and stuff, but I'm still sketchy especially with the social side of things. Hearing immature, snot-nosed brats on voice chat while playing COD is one thing, being pestered with notifications is another.

Those immature brats are the reason why I shy away from online console gaming altogether. Granted, I am willing to venture into a friends Animal Crossing community if they are trustworthy, but Birdwell will mostly remain an obscure, secluded community.

The only other game that I have that is WFC enabled is Mario Kart Wii, and I will go as far as participating in the single non-multiplayer tournaments and placing my score on the leader board, but I refuse to join multiplayer matches simply because the other racers are likely to use mods and hacks to cheat. Sad

Back to the PS4...

Not interested. I'm waiting for the right time to get a Wii U, which may not happen for at least another year or so.

Me neither. Give it a year or two and more powerful systems would dwarf the PS4 and the Wii U big time.

Moving to the x86 Architecture imo is a big mistake. I'm a fan of the Power architecture, because it's a RISC based architecture, which smothers the x86 Architecture to bits. Microsoft used the x86 architecture in the original XBox. They dumped it for the Power architecture by the time the 360 came about. Of course, now they're going back to x86 with the 720/Durango- I guess some people just don't learn from history.

Besides, what's to stop HackStation4s and HaxBox720s from appearing now? It would be just like the Hackintosh scene- people wanting to run the PS4 and 720 OSes on their PCs just so they can run the exclusive games on their desktop?

It's easier to develop, but I get your point. Besides ditching backward-compatibility, PPC seems a tad more efficient like in the pre-Intel Macs.

At least the Wii U remains based on PPC, but one has to wonder if that will turn developers off. Multiple platform releases will be easy for the PS4 and Xbox 720. The Wii U? They will have to port it, as well as take into account it's unique dual screen setup.

It's too early for me to get a Wii U anyway. I am still trying to build Elsie's GameCube collection. The only GC game I have is "Winnie the Pooh's Rumbly Tumbly Adventure". And I want "Super Mario Sunshine!"

And I'm still wanting to get Super Mario Galaxy too! >.<

Another thing is that if R* would consider porting GTA5 to the PS4 (and PC given the architecture), that would mean one heck of a port job, unless if they actually had enough experience with the RAGE engine on x86, i.e. Max Payne 3.

inb4 hacker projects attempting to run Windows or Linux on PS4...

Well, given the Hackintosh Scene, I'd think they're more interested in doing the reverse, i.e. Running the PS4 OS or xBox720 OS on a PC...

Yeah, that could be.
