Leapfrog Epic stuck in logo loop
Posted by: plummy - 11-07-2018, 09:40 PM - Forum: LeapFrog Epic - Replies (1)

Hi,

I tried to install TWRP and everything seemed to go ok.

However now the epic wont boot and loops the leapfrog logo.

Is there a way I can recover?

Many thanks

The Epic was on KOT49H.user.1.1.95.20171215.140555 updated through normal system update.

I noticed in the post:

I'd also like to add that if you ended up with a boot logo loop (i.e. the LeapFrog logo itself, not the animated loading screen), try flashing the Academy Edition ROM first.

Is there a tutorial on how to do that?

I have also worked out that the epic will boot into TWRP and Epic ROM on first boot. But it is any reboot after that where the loop takes place.

Seems to be working fine now. I re-installed recovery through SP Flash. Booted into TWRP on first boot and enabled modify.

This seems to have fixed the issue.

nabi Hot Wheels tablet stock ROM (NBTY07SMKG-US-HW)
Posted by: huckleberrypie - 10-01-2018, 02:33 PM - Forum: nabi SE - Replies (7)

And since one of my buddies got his hands on a bunch of Hot Wheels nabis for him to resell off eBay, he offered to rip the ROM off this as well. Wink

The ROM's unsigned and may only be flashed with SP Flash Tool 5.1532.00. And it goes without saying to BACK UP YOUR STOCK ROM (basically everything, especially NVRAM, seccfg and secro; from my experience if you lose these, you're SOL) before installing this image!

To flash this ROM, run SP Flash Tool, open the scatter file (MT8127_Android_scatter.txt), uncheck all but BOOT, RECOVERY and ANDROID (or just ANDROID if the other system partitions are still intact), click Download, press and hold the Volume + button whilst plugging in the device, and wait until the tool starts flashing. Grab a cup of tea or coffee, and wait until the process is finished. If done correctly your device should be good as new. Wink

If you run into any problems with this or when it comes to repairing their device in general, feel free to ask me. Wink

Took some time for my friend and I to pull this off, as we had to source a stock Barbie Nabi tablet off eBay for the sole purpose of ripping the firmware.

TWRP 3.0.2-0 recovery for LeapFrog Epic
Posted by: huckleberrypie - 04-05-2018, 11:13 AM - Forum: LeapFrog Epic - Replies (1)

Unofficial TWRP 3.0.2-0 for Academy Edition
Can be flashed through SP Flash Tool v5.1744 or later using the stock 1.1.95 ROM. Usual precautions of course.
Basic functionality works, e.g. backup, ZIP flash, ADB/MTP and so on. This is by and large a better alternative than using Kingoroot or any of those shady root utilities, not to mention it allows users especially parents to back up stuff from their kids' Epics prior to a factory reset or some other repair job.

The nabi SE is an Android-based tablet computer produced by Mattel under the Fuhu Nabi line. Released in 2016, the SE runs on Android 6.0 "Marshmallow" utilising a MediaTek MT8127 system-on-chip. Like some of the tablets from their line-up, a number of variants themed after popular children's franchises by Mattel were also produced, differing only in bundled content, branding and certain exclusive apps e.g. streaming video players with variant-specific content; ROMs used for all nabi SE variants are largely the same and appear to be mutually compatible.
Tech specs:

  • 1.3 Ghz MediaTek MT8127 quad-core processor
  • ARM Mali 450MP GPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • 7" capacitive touch screen with 1024x600 resolution
  • 16GB ROM (8GB user-accessible, expandable to 32GB with a microSD card)
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Blue Morpho UI
  • 0.3 MP front camera
  • 2 MP rear camera (720p video)
  • 2500mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery
  • Sensors: Accelerometer
  • GPS: no
  • FM radio: no
Depending on the variant, the tablet may also come bundled with content based on characters from their respective franchises. The American Girl edition for example has videos and games featuring characters from the line, namely Isabelle Dance Studio, Grace Sweet Shop, Maryellen Rocket Rally and Scene Sounds. As with most children's tablets, it has parental controls built in and Google Play services.

Magisk Root
So far Beta 16.3 is known to work (albeit with some issues) as previous versions churn out a corrupt image. I am not sure why flashing Magisk through TWRP won't work, but I might look into it some time.

Bootloader unlock
That in my opinion is what I like about the Nabi compared to the LeapFrog Epic I previously covered in another thread. Dunno if it does matter to unlock, but since there is at least some boot-level enforcement going on I'd say you should perform a bootloader unlock to be sure. Make sure to install ADB/Fastboot drivers, then in developer options, tick OEM Unlocking to allow the bootloader to be tampered with. Turn off the device, then reboot to fastboot mode by holding power and volume up for a few seconds until a DOS-ish prompt appears. Select fastboot mode, then press volume down. Now plug in the device to your PC, and in a command prompt, key in "fastboot oem unlock" sans quotes. A warning will then appear, which you should say yes to. If done properly, you should now have an unlocked Nabi SE. Wink

Issues
Tablet is stuck in fastboot mode
I've heard from a number of parents over at the Nabi Facebook page that their children's tablets somehow get stuck at this prompt...
Code:
=> FASTBOOT mode...
or this...
Code:
Select Boot Mode:
[Recovery Mode]
[Fastboot Mode]     <<=
[Normal Mode]
...likely due to kids unwittingly fiddling around with the volume and power buttons. I've made a small batch-based utility for getting them out of limbo, but as I only own a regular Nabi SE and an American Girl variant, I'd like to ask those who own the other editions to PM me for details. Once that's done I'll release it ASAP.

Forced encryption
Encryption is permanently enabled by default in this device. Which is a good thing as far as security goes, but it's crapshoot when you're trying to make backups. I think this could be fixed with Magisk but I haven't thoroughly tested it yet. You can however format /data and mount it through TWRP though, if that's any consolation. Tongue

I may go on a Linux quest again... but in a different way.
Posted by: cpd2009 - 03-28-2018, 11:22 AM - Forum: Computers, Games & Tech - Replies (3)

Lately, I have been noticing that I don't really use many of the features that Windows 10 comes with. I recently switched from Microsoft Edge to Firefox Quantum for my web browsing, and the difference is night and day. I'm also not too thrilled that many new Windows Store apps are going to be "PWA", or Progressive Web Apps. Essentially, they are going to be web pages running in it's own little window like an app. A perfect example is the upcoming Twitter app for the upcoming Windows 10 Spring update. It's a very lazy way of making so-called "apps", and if that is going to be the development method going forward, why don't I just use a web browser?

I could move down to Windows 8 like I always say, but what if Linux works out this time? I have tried it many times before, and always found some sort of issue that booted me back over to Windows, but it is showing great improvement every time I do try it. I can also use Firefox too. Wink

Here is my idea. To test Linux, I will use the latest release of Linux Mint, and install it on Greta. I will then downgrade Pearl to Windows 8.1 as I have no more need for Windows 10 features that I never use anymore. By testing Linux on Greta, I can keep track of Windows app compatibility and try out various open source replacements for my proprietary programs.

If Linux Mint or some other distro meets my needs perfectly, then I may end up replacing Win8.1 with Linux, though that idea remains to be seen.

May as well start making preparations. I will use this thread to keep track of issues or successes I come across.

Google starts booting "uncertified" Android devices off Google Play.
Posted by: cpd2009 - 03-27-2018, 12:30 AM - Forum: Android News and General Discussion - Replies (1)

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/03/...ogging-in/

This ArsTechnica article says it all, something I feared would eventually happen as Google got bigger. Have an uncertified Android device with pre-loaded Google Play? Well, you probably can't access Play or any Google app now.

People with custom ROMs seem to get a free pass after jumping through a few hoops though.

Photo Nabi SE Custom Boot Animations
Posted by: huckleberrypie - 03-18-2018, 01:52 PM - Forum: nabi SE - No Replies

Thought of doing these for the SE, particularly the "Powered by Nabi" special editions, i.e. the American Girl, Barbie and Hot Wheels tablets, mostly as the generic boot screen that came with these special editions wasn't entirely cutting it and detracted from the respective tablets' themes. Took me some time looking for commercials and/or promotional videos on YouTube with suitable logo animations, with the exception of Hot Wheels as I couldn't find a decent one so far.

I do plan on doing a Fisher-Price edition as well, but I don't have that device with me atm.

Usual instructions as with most boot animations; a Magisk module version is planned as well for those who prefer to leave /system untouched, but that is yet to be done.
