OK, so after months of making do with a free .cz.cc domain, Dave and I have decided to settle for a .org domain, for good. The name costs 10 bucks a year, and yes, ten bucks can be a lot. We still do accept donations just to keep the site alive, but it's all voluntary and you'll have to be of legal age in order to pitch in.

Oh, and you can still visit the board using the old domain, just in case.

I am in the mood for thinking on the MBTI Personality Types of Strawberry Shortcake characters. Some of us took a test and used our results for signatures in an old forum. Here is a link with brief descriptions of the different personality types.

These are my opinions. Read as I run out of colors! Feel free to disagree, and definitely feel free to add in your own opinions! I haven't tried to "type" all of the characters. I'll probably come back to this later and give my thoughts on others. Blueberry Muffin has me stumped.

Raspberry Torte:

She's an INTP with loyalties. Actually, she's a mixture of an INFJ, an INTP, and an ENTP. Overall, she's an INTP.

Lemon Meringue:

She seems like an ENFJ, too, simply a very different one from Strawberry and a more easily mislead one when she grows older.

Purple Pie Man:

Ultimately, he is an INTJ if not a typical one. Ginger Snap is a typical INTJ, focused on her projects in an original yet logical way. Purple Pie Man is eccentric and chooses to ignore patterns regardless of whether or not he sees patterns, so his personality type is harder to pinpoint. He also has a mixture of IN/P traits and ENTJ traits, the latter not being surprising since it's only one letter away from his personality type. In fact, he subconsciously wishes he were an ENTJ and he tries to come across as one.

Sour Grapes:

Grapes is, like her brother, complicatedly layered and so her core personality is difficult to determine. I say she is an ENFP. She can come across as several types. She can come across as an ESFP in positive ways, and she somewhat seems like an ENTP in negative ways. Professor Grapes is a mixture of an ESTJ and an ENFJ. Gladys is an ENFP gone bad. The most overlooked part of Grapes, blink and you miss it, is a bit of INFJ parts (that this website explains better than the other one I linked if you scroll down to the second description written by Marina Margaret Heiss). All this aside, I think Sour Grapes is an ENFP who can easily be mistaken for something else. I also think she would love to be more of an ENFJ.

First I'd like to recite which SSC episodes I've already seen, with dates, mostly for myself, though this way maybe I also remind you of some berry kind moments.

So I finally watched my DVD, "Meet Strawberry Shortcake", I'll talk about it later. I saw all the other episodes on TV. Anyway, I've found out that the TV channel doesn't broadcast the episodes in order of releases. Moreover, the DVD releases are also mixed up a little here. (For example, "Spring for Strawberry Shortcake" is labeled as the 3rd DVD in Hungary, while according to Wikipedia, it's really the 2nd DVD release.) Anyway, all the episodes are released here (even "Berry Brick Road), however "The Sweet Dreams Movie" is not released in Hungary, or at least I couldn't find anything about it.

About the DVD, I'm a bit of dissatisfied by its quality. It contains the episode in 3 languages: Hungarian, Czech, English. Though the menus are only available in Hungarian and Czech, not in English. There are no subtitles. The menu screen shows both the Hungarian and the Czech SSC logo in the right and left corners of the screen - they didn't bother to create different splash screens for the two languages. When I select "Play", a short commercial is shown that tells me to buy the other SSC DVDs from the publisher, and then the show starts. The only problem that the commercial is pretty loud, while the movie itself is pretty quiet, even related to the menu. Right, just turn up the volume, but when the menu returns, or you start the episode again (so the loud commercial is shown again), you'll get a shock of the sound. The Extras menu contains descriptions of some characters. These descriptions are quite poor and they even have some grammatical errors. After all the movie's quality is acceptable, and that is the point.

As I expected, "Meet Strawberry Shortcake" was more childish than I got used to, and so I think I prefer the season 4 episodes. Though I still liked the first episode after all, I didn't get disappointed, it was just like I expected it to be. And I'm curious about all the other episodes as well.

And I am sad - curious why? I've found out that I've seen almost all the season 4 episodes. I've seen a bit of even the two remaining ones (I just missed the beginning of them). I expected the TV channel to restart the series from the very beginning when it gets to the end of it, but instead it will broadcast a different show in Strawberry's former timeframe. That means I'll be left without Strawberry Shortcake for a berry lot of time. And now I'm really regretting that I didn't buy more DVDs in the supermarket. Who knows when will I find discounted SSC DVDs again? So I'm quite sad because I miss Strawberry, I want to see more episodes! Can you tell me something to cheer me up?

I see some of us have even met several dubs of Strawberry Shortcake. Here is the place to talk about them! What do you like or dislike in the translations? Or just post anything from Strawberry Shortcake in non-english!

I'll start with my observations about the Hungarian dub. I hope you'll find it interesting.


What I like:

• Strawberry's Hungarian name: "Eperke", in which "eper" means "strawberry", with "-ka/-ke" diminutive suffix. Such suffix is used to express littleness or cuteness. So the literal translation might be "little Strawberry" or "cute Strawberry". Though as I observed, she's always called as "Eperke", the "Shortcake" part is never translated, it is completely left out.
  
  
  
• Strawberry's typical usage of the word "berry" as an adverb (like "berry good", "berry amazing") is translated as "epresen". I won't go into the complicated analysis of this word, and because I don't have enough knowledge about linguistics, I would need to do some research myself.* An example of usage: "epresen jó" ("strawberry good"). From the positive nature of this word, it is never used with negative adjectives, so Eperke never says "epresen rossz" (that would mean "strawberry wrong"). (I told it because when I watched "Big Country Fun" in English, I was surprised when Strawberry has commented Carmel Corn's letter as "sounds like something's berry wrong".) Moreover, "epresen" is also used with verbs, e.g. "epresen köszönöm", which means something like "I thank it with strawberries". I've never encountered such usage in original English, but it should be like "berry thank you". (I should watch "Berry Brick Road" in English, that had an "epresen köszönöm", that's sure. I'm curious if Strawberry really says "berry thank you" there.)

• The dumb translation of the refrain of the main title song. When the original lyrics says "That girl's so sweet, just like her name", the Hungarian says "Nem sért, nem bánt, ő jó barát", which means "she doesn't harm, she doesn't offend, she's a good friend". OMGWTF??? It just sounds really stupid. It's somewhat OK that they didn't keep the original meaning, but stating that she doesn't harm, etc. is just stupid. Like it was expectable from Strawberry to hurt you, so it should be told that she doesn't. It's like they'd expect kids to be so stupid that they need to be told that Strawberry doesn't hurt. If the series were about a little monster, then it would be fine - monsters hurt by default, but Strawberry doesn't. Anyway, this was the reason why I actually searched for the English version of the title, because I couldn't believe that the original says so, it must be an inaccurate translation. And I was right.
  
  
  
• The translation of the names of some characters are also poor. As I've already told, "Angel Cake" is translated as "Karamella", which means "caramel". But I find this particular name still acceptable. It can get away, at least caramel is sweet. Another one of this kind: "Crepes' Suzette" is "csokikrém", which means "chocolate cream". But the least are much worse. "Purple Pieman" is "Pástétom", which rather means "paste". Though the dictionary also lists "pie" as its meaning, generally it is not that kind of pie that the Purple Pieman is dealing with. "Huckleberry Pie" became "Puffancs", I can't even translate that word, most of the times it's used to refer to fatty things.

• The Hungarian title of Strawberry Shortcake is "Eperke és barátai" ("Strawberry and her friends"). As I previously stated, "Shortcake" is left out.
  
• The title song's beginning ("Straw-ba-ba-ba-berry[x3] Shortcake") in Hungarian: "Itt van, eljött Eperke[x3] hozzád" ("Here is, came along Strawberry" - just to correct the word order: "Strawbery is here, she came along"). I've seen the intro in several languages on YouTube, but none of them handled it without stuttering.
  
• Generally, the title song is translated so loosely that it's almost unrelated to the original. Considering the title, I think loose translation is OK - the point is that Strawberry is very nice and friendly - unless they take something really dumb. And they did something... just see the first point on my "What I don't like" list.

I was glad to find a Strawberry forum. Probably you'll be surprised to get to know that I happen to be a 22-year-old boy from Hungary, mostly because generally it's not socially accepted to like Strawberry in this age, as a boy. However, as I glanced through this forum, read some posts, I suppose you're pals who either follow Strawberry since the 80s, or met her because you have kids to watch Strawberry with... or you're kids yourselves. Though it's just a guess. I'm kind of a computer geek, I work as a Unix sysadmin at one of the world's largest multinational companies. (Though it's not as good as it sounds.)

How I met Strawberry Shortcake? I confess at first I only met her parodies. Most notably Strawberry Sweetcake from Drawn Together. Well she was an evil gal who wanted to cook and then eat Wooldoor Sockbat. A memorable quote from her: "You can't spell slaughter without laughter!". I liked this character so much that I looked up the real Strawberry. Then (many months later) I noticed that a Strawberry Shortcake cartoon is being broadcasted on one of the kids channels. I took the opportunity to get to know the real Strawberry Shortcake, at last. For some reason I liked it, regardless that I only saw a few episodes. Now I know that I'm watching the last season, when the look of the characters have changed, so Strawberry now has a long hair. The most recent episode I've seen is when Strawberry visits the Land of Oz. Because I'm watching the series in Hungarian, I'll have a bit of trouble identifying the characters by their English names, so sorry for that in advance. I confess I don't even know all of the characters yet. At the end of the day I don't have any excuse for watching Strawberry Shortcake. I'm not young, not a girl, and I don't have kids. I just watch it and I like it, that's all. I hope you don't think I'm mentally ill.

Why I liked Strawberry Shortcake? She's drawn well, she's beautiful. And I like her optimism. Strange, though, because I'm a pessimistic man - that is the exact reason why I like optimistic characters. They help me to notice good things I wouldn't see. It's a bit of hard to tell. After all, I wish Strawberry lived in real life - I'm sure I'd send her a fan mail.

Anyway, how do you like my name? I thought to choose a name that fits Strawberryland's atmosphere. On the other hand, only girls had fruitty names - so is my name girlish? Though there aren't many male characters in the show at all. Maybe if there would be more males, some of them would also have fruitty names. Unfortunately, I've never had kiwifruit jam in my life, but it must be delicious.
