Maybe I should really buy an original DVD (American release, I mean). I noticed that Hungarian releases are quite of stripped down. For example, most DVDs contain a description of the characters, but it's pretty useless, because always the same characters are introduced with the exact same text (that has grammatical mistakes, by the way). While they cared to release the video clips of the first season (though in a mixed-up order), the season 2 DVDs contain redundant video clips, and they stripped the original English dub of them. I find it mandatory to watch everything in English as well. The season 1 DVDs have the English dubs for the clips, as I expect it.
So... This new DVD looks pretty nice. It's such a pity that they don't make more of the 2003 series. Even though I haven't seen any of the new 2009 series, judging by everything I read about it, it can't be that good as the 2003 series. (In turn, I suspect it to be much worse actually. - Where is Ginger Snap and what happened to Plum Pudding? And I could go on with a list...) Can't we make a petition or something to get them to continue the 2003 series?

Eep! My apologies, Blackberry.
Ginger Snap and others are gone, Kiwi, because the current version got rid of everyone whose names are not directly connected to fruit. Encouraging healthy eating is good. Banning desserts is not good.

Killing off the best characters... And even alter the remaining ones, curtail them of their most relevant characteristics - see Plum Pudding. Actually I'm really trying to find anything valuable in the new series, but simply I can't. I still haven't seen a full episode yet, but I did read a lot and saw some clips at strawberryshortcake.com, and I found it quite ugly. Nah, but it's off-topic here, maybe I'll create a new thread to discuss the 2009 series.

I can't find really anything valuable in the new series, either.

The Best Medicine > Magic. Because SCIENCE! can prove the former.

Personally, I find it interesting to see the changes that characters have gone through over all the incarnations. As for the 2009 series, it's hard for me to say whether or not it's better or worse than the 2003 series, but there is one aspect in which it stands head and shoulders above the 2003 series (for me, anyway): voice acting! Having actual professional voice actors makes so much difference.

Having actual professional voice actors makes so much difference. Whereas I prefer the DiC voices, what with many of them living in the same locality (as each other), and what with many of them having worked in minor productions together before and after the series. The "vibe" I get from them is that they're like one big community family. In my humble opinion, this trumps professionalism. I also liked how the 1980s voices were a hodgepodge of professional voice actors and other types of actors. Jerelyn Craden, Sour Grapes' voice from 1983 - 1986, is warm and personable despite being up in her years now. Most modern professionals are detached from fans. Of course, I can see why anyone would have different preferences. A difference between you and I is that you are more... technical than I, and I am more biased by emotion. |
