It gives me annoying advertising popups that you cannot disable unless you pay for the Premium version.

Back to MS Security Essentials. At least it doesn't annoy people with useless and annoying ads.

Strange, I rarely have those on my end. Panda Cloud AV does spew out adverts at times, but they're relatively rare and aren't that obtrusive.

There are ways to turn off the popups for definition updates, but it's defined in seconds rather than a simple checkbox. As for the adverts, I kept getting ones for survey and a button to install another module, which likely requires purchase of the premium version. I haven't got around to uninstalling Avast from Greta, so If one pops up, I'll share a screenshot.

Brilliant Hollywood actor Robin Williams has passed away, according to CNN.

The news apparently just broke. Sad

As much as I have grown to like Windows 8.1, this should at last make some people consider upgrading from Windows 7 or even XP. An actual start menu, virtual desktops, running Metro apps in actual Windows... it appears to be a solid release.

I just hope MS gives current Windows 8.1 users a free update to it, or at the very least have an inexpensive upgrade option available.

I know you got more or less used to 8.x, but yeah, popular consensus leaned along the lines of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Heh, there are times I would advise would-be 8.x PC owners at computer stores to consider installing a start menu application if they find the UI a bit unwieldy.

Dollar store audio cassettes. Everyone has seen them. They cost $1 for a package of three 60 minute tapes. Quality greatly varied. Some of them were rather good, while others were so cheap they should have been sold for 25 cents a package. Even if you got a pack that worked well, they were only good for recording off the radio or voice recording. These weren't meant for high end audio equipment, but since I am not an audiophile, these tapes did just fine for many years.

Then you come across eBay, and find a package of said tapes... selling at $9.99 for a single 3-pack. If it were a 3 pack of TDK Type-IV tapes, then $9.99 would actually be a bargain.
